New Resource to Support Physicians on Sick Note Requests
Posted On May 1, 2026Reducing administrative burden for family physicians has been a longstanding priority for the BCCFP, and we are pleased to share a meaningful step forward.
Following our successful advocacy around B.C.'s sick note legislation, the BCCFP, Doctors of BC, BC Family Doctors, and the Consultant Specialists of BC have jointly developed a standardized letter that physicians can share with patients who receive requests for sick notes from their employers. The letter is designed to help employers understand recent changes to BC's sick note requirements under the Employment Standards Act, and to support employees in navigating those conversations in the workplace.
Routine sick note requests are among the most common sources of unnecessary administrative work for family physicians today. These appointments do not contribute to patient recovery, increase the risk of spreading illness, and divert clinical time away from patients with more pressing needs. For patients, the burden is equally real as unnecessary visits carry costs in time, transportation, and childcare that many can ill afford.
This letter is a practical resource for both employers and employees, helping to align workplace practices with the new legislation.
