BCCFP Provides Policy Recommendations on Sick Note Legislation

Posted On August 8, 2025

Following the government's April announcement to eliminate sick note requirements, we have been directly involved in shaping Bill 11 through direct consultation with the Ministries of Health and Labour.

Our role evolved from initial advocacy to active policy consultation, ensuring family physician expertise informed the legislative details. During our June 5th meeting with government officials, we presented evidence-based recommendations gathered through an extensive member survey.

Our consultation provided the government with critical data from over 541 family physicians across BC. Key insights included:

  • 92% of our members reported reducing administrative burdens would improve physician retention
  • 95% reported administrative burden impacts their relationships with patients.

This input helps to ensure Bill 11 addresses administrative challenges facing family physicians, while supporting public health goals. In 2024, family physicians in British Columbia issued approximately 1.6 million sick notes, clinical time that will be freed up for patients who need care.

With Bill 11 set to pass this fall, we look forward to continued consultation with the government on broader administrative burden reduction efforts.
