2024-2025 Annual Report
Ripples of Impact
In August 2024, we set our strategic priorities for 2025-28: Bold Advocacy, Focused Support, and Strategic Partnerships. This year’s report reflects on how these priorities have guided our journey, strengthened our membership community, and extended the ripple effect of family physicians across BC.
Honouring the Land
The BC College of Family Physicians (BCCFP) is located on the unceded and traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are deeply grateful to learn and work on these lands, and we recognize that our members serve communities on many Indigenous territories across British Columbia.
As we strive toward health equity, we acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous Peoples’ health and well-being, and we commit to advancing culturally safe, relationship-based care and supporting reconciliation through our work.
Member Stats at a Glance
As the largest member association for family physicans in BC, our growing membership is both a point of pride and a privilege. Each year, more family physicians choose to join our community, strengthening our collective voice and impact.
We’re grateful to represent such an engaged and growing group of dedicated family physicians, with engagement rates consistently surpassing the nonprofit average of 46.4% (Brevo, 2025).
Your continued engagement fuels our advocacy, amplifies our influence, and drives real change for family medicine across the province.

Bold Advocacy
In last year’s annual report, we shared that 72% of members identified 'Advocacy' as a top priority for BCCFP. We heard you - and we’ve stepped up our efforts.
Over the past year, we’ve kept pushing for meaningful change on the issues impacting our members and their patients, strengthened our relationships with elected officials and partners, and ensured family medicine remains a top priority.

Extending the Appreciation: Family Doctor Month
Family doctors are there through life’s biggest moments. They build long-term relationships, provide comprehensive care, and advocate for better health outcomes in every corner of our province.
Every May 19, in line with World Family Doctor Day, we mark BC Family Doctor Day to recognize the commitment, compassion, and care of BC family physicians. But one day simply doesn’t reflect the depth of their impact.
This year, we expanded Family Doctor Day into Family Doctor Month with a series of events and initiatives to highlight the importance of their work.
Building Impact Through Collective Action: Advocacy Day at the Legislature
On May 7, 2025, we visited the BC Legislature in Victoria and met face-to-face with MLAs and government leaders. Our goal? To advocate for meaningful change that strengthens family medicine and patient care for the long term.
Family physicians create a ripple effect throughout communities, and the wider health care system. When they’re supported, hospitals see fewer admissions, specialists receive less referrals, and patients experience better health outcomes. We met over 40 elected officials with 3 Key Asks: Invest in family physician-led team based care, reduce unnecessary admin burdens, and address the shortage of vital rural family physicians.

BCCFP members who report admin tasks as "too high":
In rural communities, higher retention of family physicians decreases hospitalization rates by up to:
Impact Beyond the Report
During late summer and early fall this year, we’ve been actively engaged in consultations on sick note legislation, long-term sick leave, and the 2025 provincial pre-budget process - key opportunities to advance solutions that reduce administrative burdens and strengthen family medicine across BC.
While these initiatives fall outside the 2024–25 financial year and are not reflected in this report, they represent meaningful progress driven by our advocacy efforts above.
Focused Support
Our Focused Support priority is about celebrating the heart of what makes our community strong: connection, learning, and care. Each year, we listen, adapt, and evolve to ensure our programs and services truly reflect the needs of family physicians across BC.
A cornerstone of this work is our Annual Awards Program, which shines a light on the ripple effect of family physicians who go above and beyond for their patients, learners, and communities.

2025 Award Recipients
This year we received nearly 700 heartfelt nominations, an incredible testament to the deep appreciation and respect British Columbians have for family doctors.
Through these nominations, we heard powerful stories of gratitude, compassion, advocacy, education, and unwavering commitment to community well-being. The value of family medicine was evident – family physicians play a vital role in creating healthy communities across BC.
2025 Awards Celebration
What a night! Our annual Awards Celebration was filled with excitement, connection, and heartfelt moments that captured the incredible spirit of BC’s family medicine community. We honoured our 2025 award recipients, heard inspiring speeches, and had a lot of fun in the process!
Thank you to all of those who joined us. Watch the recap video to (re)live the magic and stay tuned for 2026 ticket announcements!
Dinner with Docs
For over a decade, Dinner with Docs has brought together family physicians and medical students across the province for meaningful conversations over a shared meal - creating space to connect, inspire, and strengthen interest in family medicine. This long-running tradition continues to be one of our most valued community-building events.
We were delighted by the enthusiastic response to our recent call for members to host a table of medical students - a reflection of your generosity and commitment to mentoring the next generation.
Thank you to all of the incredible BCCFP members who gave their time to share their experience and advice with the next generation of family physicians:

Ripples of Impact
As our organization continues to grow and evolve, it became important to ensure our visual identity did the same. We set out to create a stronger, clearer brand story - one that truly reflects who we are and what we stand for. The result: a fresh, cohesive identity that captures our purpose to empower, connect and advocate for our members.
Designed with member needs in mind, our updated website offers clearer pathways to explore upcoming events, access tools and resources, and stay engaged with advocacy efforts.
It’s one more way we’re focusing on supporting you in your practise.
Strategic Partnerships
Our Strategic Partnerships priority is rooted in collaboration - working alongside others to take meaningful action toward shared goals. A vital part of this work is our commitment to being guided by Indigenous voices and perspectives as we continue our reconciliation journey.
We’re focused on empowering members with the supports you need to embed cultural safety in your own practices - helping foster more inclusive, respectful, and responsive care across communities.
Cultural Safety & Humility Grants Program
BCCFP honours Indigenous cultural practices and recognizes the ongoing impact of historical injustices on Indigenous health in British Columbia. We are committed to advocating for culturally safe healthcare to address health inequities.
Our Cultural Safety Grants Program supported eight initiatives this year. These grants foster impactful work, building and strengthening relationships between family physicians and Indigenous communities across BC.
We hope these examples inspire meaningful action toward reconciliation efforts in BC and beyond.

Celebrating and Strengthening Primary Care in BC
BC Family Doctor Day, in line with World Family Doctor Day, is a time to celebrate all family physicians across British Columbia.
In 2025 and for the seventh consecutive year, the BC Government recognized BCCFP's request to officially proclaim May 19 as BC Family Doctor Day. See the 2025 proclamation here, and read the official statement from Health Minister Josie Osborne here.
We also teamed up with our partners at BC Family Doctors to once again share a joint video message of recognition, celebration and, most importantly, of hope.
Collective Advocacy in Action: The elimination of sick notes
In April 2025, we celebrated a significant win for both patients and family physicians with the announcement from the provincial government to eliminate employer-mandated sick notes for short-duration illnesses.
This policy change is helping reduce unnecessary strain on BC’s health care system and is the result of years of persistent advocacy by family physicians, the BCCFP, and our partners across the province.
On the announcement, Dr. Katherine Bell commented: “This is great news for patients and family physicians. Sick notes were a completely unnecessary administrative burden that took time away from patient care. Administrative tasks take up 20-30% of a family physician’s time – time that could be better spent with patients.”
Thank you to all of you who took the time to complete our survey on administrative burden. Your collective voice was clear: reducing unnecessary admin burden remains one of the most pressing issues for you.
