Research and Education Foundation
Mission
The Research and Education Foundation (REF) is a registered charitable
organization (#88828 8669 RR0001) whose mission is to provide funding to
support teachers, researchers and family medicine practitioners in the
development and dissemination of new knowledge and skills in order to
improve the quality of comprehensive, patient-centered community-based
health care for all Canadians. Through
this foundation, the BCCFP Research Awards Fund
grants applications for research funding.
Criteria

Be a family physician in good standing with the CFPC/BCCFP, or a
registered family medicine resident in good standing in the UBC Family
Practice residency program, or a medical student in good standing in
the UBC School of Medicine program (all sites are eligible)

Complete the required application form including a description of
and budget of the planned research project and a copy of a Statement of
Approval from a Research Ethics Board, which is Tri-Council compliant,
to the BCCFP office, attention “BCCFP Research Award Committee”

In the submission, demonstrate that the objectives of the research
project are consistent with the REF Mission and that the project
addresses one or more of the Principles of Family Medicine (i.e. patient
centered, community based, enhancing family physician clinical skills,
focused on the family physician as a resource to his/her population)

Commit to sharing the results of the research with other medical
students, residents and/or family physicians and to have their name and
project publicized by the BCCFP. Applicants are encouraged to submit a
completed manuscript for publication in Canadian Family Physician or
another peer reviewed medical journal of their choice

Award recipients are expected to submit a research report and financial
statements related to their projects to the REF, the CFPC Honours and
Awards Committee, and the BC Research Awards Committee within a reasonable
time following the completion of their projects - generally one year

Applicants must commit to acknowledge the support of the CFPC’s
Research & Education Foundation in all presentations and publications of the
work supported by this award. |
Process
The BCCFP Research Awards Committee will review all applications and will
recommend award recipients to the CFPC Honours and Awards Committee, which
will make the final recommendation to the REF. The REF will send congratulatory
letters, along with the monetary awards, to the award recipients.
Application and supporting documents may
be submitted electronically to
office@bccfp.bc.ca.
Electronic
submission of all documents is preferred.
If submitting by hardcopy, 5 copies of the
application are to be sent to the BCCFP office.
Award recipients are expected to submit a research report and financial
statements related to their projects to the REF, the CFPC Honours and Awards
Committee, and the BCCFP Research Awards Committee within one year following
the completion of their projects.
Funding
The amount of support is wholly at the discretion of the granting agency
and subject to the availability of funds and the assessed merits of the
proposed project. Student and resident projects will customarily be supported
in the range of $0 - $1,000 (averaging about $500). Grants to practicing community
physicians are to be in the range of $1,000 - $2,500.
Timelines
Applications will be reviewed quarterly. Submission deadlines are: August 31,
November 30, February 28 and May 31.
Initial reviews will generally be completed within
3 weeks. Applicants will be informed of the results within the subsequent
2 weeks.
After passing initial review,
applications will be forwarded to the CFPC Honours
and Awards Committee with a response expected within 4 weeks.
Once approved by the Honours & Awards Committee, cheques on behalf of the
Research & Education Foundation will be issued to the Principle Investigator.
