Projects - Family Medicine Interest Group

Medical Student Conference

In September, the BCCFP funded the inaugural 2010 BCCFP Medical Student Conference.   Working with the UBC Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG), the event was attended by over 130 first year medical students who got a first hand look at what a career in Family Medicine may be like.

Students, who had little or no exposure to Family Medicine, were amazed by its diversity and being very well-suited for a family-oriented lifestyle.

Topics included Why Family Medicine Should Rule the World, Remuneration, Electronic Medical Records, Family Medicine in the Future, along with focused practice presentations in Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine, International Health, Marginalized Populations, Women's Health and Research.   Next year will include more topics and focused practice presentations.

Dinner with Docs

The 3rd annual 2010 BCCFP Dinner with Docs brought together over 60 UBC medical students and enthusiastic family physicians, which included:

  • Lisa Gaede (President-Elect BCCFP)
  • Nirvair Levitt (CFPC Family Physician of the Year)
  • Wilson Mahrin (UBC Family Medicine Graduate)
  • Unjali Malhotra (Medical Director Options for Sexual Health)
  • Janet Ip (UBC Family Medicine Graduate)
  • Jason Kason (Former UBC Chief Resident)
  • Tanya Fairweather (BCWH)
  • Jim Thorsteinson (BCCFP Executive Director)
  • Rosanna Lima (IMG and College Certificant)
  • Fraser Norrie (Three Bridges Health Clinic)

Each physician hosted a table at the Medical Student Alumni Centre. Conversation on the joys of Family Medicine, focused practices and how the professions fits into their family life and why Family Medicine may be the right career choice.

Of the evaluations returned, all said their interest in Family Medicine had "increased" after this event with comments on what they would take away from the event being:

  • The wide variety of practice areas and balance between life and career
  • Family Medicine offers a very diverse and flexible career
  • Diversity of Family Medicine and how there is a lot of opportunities to learn new skills
  • A lot of room for exploration of interests throughout a career in Family Medicine
  • There is more to rural practice than I thought and will be something I look into
  • Very interesting stories of international medicine and remote community medicine
  • How happy all the docs are
  • Great to be able to talk one on one with family docs that do such diverse things and are so passionate about what they do

This same event was also held in Victoria for a second year in a row with Doctors Fiona Manning, Frank Egan, Fil Edora and Jay Aiken taking the time to host.

A similiar event is also planned for Prince George.
